Charles Darwin was born 200 years ago on February 12. It took a while for his ideas to take effect, but they are pervasive now. Darwin wrote way before computers but as Mike Gualtieri of Forrester recently wrote, his ideas on "survival of the fittest is an elegant explanation of why so many species exist, why some become extinct, and why some flourish."
Mike recently reflected on what Darwin might say about application developers. He wrote that, "as long as developers continue to write billions of lines of code, they are not going the way of the dinosaurs or the buggy whip manufacturers anytime soon." However, there is a caveat to this. Mike quoted Darwin on the secret to application developers' success. "It is not the strongest of species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most responsive to change."
IT is a field of constant change so successful application developers are those that follow Darwin's pronouncements. Agile and SOA are two of those changes in paradigms that require nimble thinking. Success involves moving off of old ways to fully embrace all aspects of the new approaches. A (belated) Happy birthday Charles Darwin. (Photo above by ChrisL_AK under Creative Commons).
